On the same day talks wrap up over weapons in Iraq, more local troops were deployed to the Persian Gulf. Members of the 845th Postal Unit gathered in Tulsa on Sunday to prepare for departure overseas. And members of the 3rd Combat Communications Group will deploy Tuesday from Oklahoma City. With thousands of troops preparing for possible war, you may wonder how you can help here on the home front. War bonds have always been associated with patriotism. In World War II, 185 billion dollars worth of securities were sold to help finance the war. But a Tulsa mother is worried this common form of investing in America might be taken away by the very Department that issues the securities. Susan Dale is no average supporter of American Patriotism. Her mother, Randi helped promote WW II bonds on the front cover of "Popular Photography". She believes so much in her country, she's waging her own war against the United States Treasury Department. She says they are taking away the common man's form of investing in freedom, by planning to dismantle the marketing department, the people who promote what are now called "Patriot Bonds". Series Double-E "Patriot Bonds" are available at most banks and financial institutions. A 50-dollar savings bond, for example, is purchased for half-value, 25 dollars, then redeemed ten years later. The new Series double-E bond, issued in December of 2001, helps fund the war on terrorism with an interest rate of 4.2 percent. |
