THE
FREEDOM GIRLS' STORY
Three weeks after 9/11/01, Anastasia was sitting
on the bed with her father and I watching TV, when NYC came on. I reached for
the remote; Anastasia put her hand on mine and said, " No mommy don’t
change the channel, when I grow up I am going to be a fireman so I can help
those people. After I got myself back together I went and found my mothers cover
picture. All I had was a Black and White copy of the cover.
" Do you know who this is?"
" No."
"This is your grandmother in W.W.II when she was a child
and promoted War Bonds.( My mother was on the front cover of Popular
Photography, July issue 1944,She is the only known person to grace the front of
a magazine promoting the sale War bonds with a War Bond in the back ground)
Anastasia face lit up and she said," That is what I am going to do, I am
going to do the same, sell War Bonds. "I told her that we do not have war
bonds now but we can find something you can do. She replied " No, mommy I
am going to do the same as grandma. "I didn’t want to break her bubble.
The next day I called my mother and asked her how old she was
when she was on the cover. She quickly replied "Did
you see it?"
"See what?"
" I could not sleep and turned on the TV at 3:00 am in the
morning and scrolling across the screen it said, " President Bush wants to
re-instate the War Bonds." She paused and said,"I was 5 when the cover
came out." Then we realized that history was repeating in our family. My
daughter was one month and one day different in age from my mother which was 58
years ago.
The Freedom Girls were born. I started trying to get ahold of
the U.S. Treasury. We were willing to donate our image to the government to
promote the up and coming War Bonds. With the help of Senator Nichols we were
able to get a hold of the Treasury. Debbie at the U.S. Treasury said, they liked
our idea but because they were not actively promoting them; they could not take
us up on the offer at this time.
The Patriot Bonds were originally going to be announced on Dec
13, 2001, then at the last minute it changed to Dec 11, 2001.The Freedom Girls
held the first Patriot Bond Rally Dec. 17, 2001. It was eleven hours. We had a
bank sell the bonds and passed out sacks with coupons from local businesses. At
the Rally, Anastasia meet a lot of Vets and she went up to one of them and
pulled on his shirt tails and she said "Sir, can I give you a hug and tell
you Thank You." He fought back tears ( he fought in both Vietnam and Korea)
and said, " Yes, sweetie and you know you are the only person that has said
Thank You besides my family."
The next week Anastasia told me that we needed to make her dolly
a costume so she can come with us. So when we were making this costume she said,
" We need to make one for my best friend." I said, "OK."
" No mommy , my other best friend, you know when it is dark
and scary outside or when something's scary on TV , he can sleep at night and
not be scared anymore."
" Who are you talking about?"
" You know, mommy , my best friend , you know President
Bush. "So we have a doll waiting for him, in hope that one day she can hand
deliver this doll to him. The President has sent us a letter and photograph and
we have it framed on the wall and every time it storms Anastasia gets the doll
out so the President will not be scared.
In February, Anastasia figured out our birthdays.
" Mommy , you are a mommy today, you are born on the 2nd.
I am going to be a mommy, I am born on the 3rd, and Grandma is
your mommy she is born on the 4th.
Our birthdays add up to 9 and Anastasia is one month and one day
different in age from my mother 58 years ago( 9-11)
The next goal was to convince Popular Photography to redo the
history. The Editor was for it but the owner was no interested. It is a French
owned magazine, but they did show pictures of Flags. They were selling
patriotism and not willing to give back.
By May 2002 we had received a letter from President Bush, 11
different Governors, photo from Elmo for sesame street, and other supporters.
We had our posters printed on June 15, about the same time my
mother’s cover came out , repeating history.
At the Tulsa State Fair 2002 ( Sep 26– Oct 6), The Tulsa
Republican Party was nice to give us a table in their booth to promote the
bonds. Out of twenty-eight banks I called hoping to find one bank to sell for
one day, 8 banks did not know they sold Patriot Bonds and not one would
volunteer. . Do we always have to make money to help America? At the Fair we
talked about how we could rebuild our community $25.00 at a time with the
purchase of a U.S. Patriot War Bonds.
We are starting the Thank You card drive to send cards overseas
to the military. We hope to collect 100,000 by Nov. 1, 2002. We give any
military men or women in uniform and any POW a free poster. I talked with many
soldiers that were leaving in the next few days. I told them they can email us
any time, I am there for them. We met over seventeen POW’S , which we also
honored them with posters and Thanked them for our FUTURE today, a lot of them
had tears . There was one POW from the Vietnam War that we touched. He honored
my daughter with his 101st Airborne pin. It took me twenty minutes before I
could talk without tears.
My daughter calls all the past and present soldiers heroes but
she is calling all POW’S super heroes. We are doing this from our heart and
for all soldiers, that are fighting for our Freedom. The enemies do not ask
before they shoot, " Can you tell me what party you belong to?" they
just shoot. The next step is to raise money so we can send all military over sea’s
a poster , with a Thank You card .
We have been told that we might be the only people in the USA
actively promoting the Patriot Bonds with the spirit of Patriotism. My mother
and I are working two jobs each to fund this and hope that one day others will
join us.
